Home Security Guard Dogs

A huge investment in your home's security is a dog. When deciding to get a home security dog, there is a lot to take into consideration. Do you want a guard dog or a watch dog? Does the city you live in have any laws regarding what dog breeds are allowed? Do you have the time it will take to properly train your dog? Do you have a reliable breeder?

The first question to ask is whether this dog is needed as a Home Security Guard dog or as a barking watch dog? A home security guard dog is needed if you suspect you will need the strength, bulk, aggression, courage, territorial sense and resistance to attack. In contrast, a watch dog is one that is easily excited and will bark vigorously at anything out of the ordinary.

Below is a list and description of five home security guard dogs designated from a group of breeders, veterinarians and trainers. While it is not a definite science that one breed is better than other, it is a helpful guideline. Specific training, bloodline, sex, and even hair color can all affect how well a dog does in keeping intruders away.

The Fila Brasileiro is a breed one might have heard of. It is a cross between a Mastiff and a Bloodhound. It was created to protect Brazilian plantations. It's name comes from the Portugese word for “to hold”. This breed is known to attack and hold it's prey until the owner can arrive and take over.

A common home security guard dog is the Rottweiler. It's known for its power and self confidence. This breed must be bred responsibly to ensure aggression is not created that cannot be controlled.

The Doberman was originally created to be a personal protector for a tax collector. It is naturally intelligent and eager to please. Therefore it must be carefully trained and socialized.

The Belgian Sheperd Dog looks similar to the German Sheperd and one look can see why these dogs are popular home security guard dogs. They are large in body size, strong, intelligent, with strong sense of hearing and smell.

Finally, the American Pitbull Terrier is a dog that has gotten a lot of media. The breed has a long history of being a great family dog and at one time was called the “nanny” dog. Bad breeding and bad trainers have lead this home security dog to be banned from some cities and entirely from England! It is extremely strong and intelligent and overly eager to please its owner.

If you decide to get a home security guard dog, make sure you do your research to get the dog that best fits your needs and personality. Invest in the dog's training to ensure the safety of the dog and your family. And remember, the training is never done. Dogs, like people, need stimulation and reviews to make sure they stay on top of the game.

As far as home security is dogs are great, but an affordable home security system is the best home security addition for you and your family.
